Is there a limit to vacation time?

 Yotta (1147)    6 Sep 2019 02:46:37

Currently there is no limit.

If it ever changes, let me know. I got 8 games with an opponent who's been on vacation for about 2 months !!

I've got 12 games from one opponent that have been at a standstill for a long time also. And until now I wasn't aware there was a vacation option on this site, which I think is a good thing to have, but I would agree there should be some limits, such as a maximal limit for any one time away period before the clock starts ticking again (? 2 weeks, ?3 weeks) as well as a limit on total vacation days for a calendar year, perhaps pegged to the data a person joined, with that as his/her "anniversary" date that commences a new year for these purposes.

Something tells me you & I are talking about the same opponent !!

I’ll put something in place that it allows vacation for a maximum of two weeks at a time.

If someone needs a medical leave for more that 2 weeks, then they should let you Yotta know about it. That should be the only exception.

I certainly agree that if someone has a medical issue, or some other unusual, unexpected hardship, that turns out to be over 2 weeks, it would be a reasonable and decent thing for longer exceptions, at the discretion of management. Without suggesting it might apply to anybody in particular, I would hope someone wouldn't then sign in for 5 minutes toward the end of the 2 weeks, then immediately sign out for 2 more weeks vacation, etc. That's why I suggested a limit for total days in a particular year, also.

Other chess sites have a variety of solutions to this problem. It might be a matter of which is easiest to implement.

Chess applications often have no vacation time. That’d be the easiest solution.

Remaining on vacation indefinitely is unsportsmanlike. I could understand if the person were very ill, or if there was a tragedy in the family, or if it were a month's holiday somewhere. But it would be nice to know when or if vacation was ever going to end. For all we know the opponent might have passed on to chess heaven. So there should be a time limit, and I hope it will be done very soon.

I'm still waiting for an opponent since early August (a total of 8 games with this opponent).

 WhitemoonG (820)    15 Sep 2019 00:23:09

I guess I can top that with 12 games frozen in time!

I vote for not having any vacation time at all until an acceptable solution is put in place.

It seems to me that some players want to stay on permanent vacation because they can't face losing their games. So there should be a maximum vacation period of 4 weeks.

 ketchuplover (1355)    18 Sep 2019 17:21:55

How about basing vacation time on games played and or victories?

Tournament Spring Sun Special has no less than four players on vacation.

 WhitemoonG (820)    26 Sep 2019 16:37:50

On vacation for 3 months?

 Yotta (1147)    28 Sep 2019 06:30:46

Vacation time restrictions are now implemented on ChessConquest.

Each player receives 20 days per year. At the beginning of each year all players' allocated vacation times are reset to 20 days, and unused vacation time do not carry over to the next year.

The system will automatically revoke a player's vacation status as soon as their vacation time runs out.

I like the idea! Im just curious as to how you came up with 20! Pretty sure thats the least amount of days as opposed to most sites!

 Yotta (1147)    28 Sep 2019 13:41:51

There was no real science behind deciding on 20 days.

If you guys think we should rather increase the number of days, let's discuss it here to decide as a community what the allowed number of vacation days should be.

 masteryeo (851)    28 Sep 2019 14:39:14

Im in for 28(4weeks) or 30 days! But to be honest it doesnt matter as long as there is somthing in place!

 guss (1988)    28 Sep 2019 15:14:27

I belong to another site that gives people a total of 35 days per year. ( NO carryovers)

 goldentree (2202)    28 Sep 2019 15:30:11

20 days in fine for me. I also like 4 weeks or 30 days just in case something happens. Some other chess sites have weekend time clock freeze like Saturday and Sunday or just Sunday only. This is just another alternative to extending more vacation time.

 ketchuplover (1355)    28 Sep 2019 20:56:18

20 days should be the minimum with 1 day added after every full month without timing out. Used vacation days would NOT affect the full month. Just a humble suggestion :)

 Yotta (1147)    29 Sep 2019 05:26:52

We've increased the vacation days to 30 days per year.

Players are can now also see how much vacation time they have left on their dashboard.
